“I spent years sitting with people in their hardest moments. When I found myself on the other side of that conversation, I understood what was missing. Not just a payment option. Someone who would hold the space and work with you.”

Suzanne's Why

When Pet Insurance and Financing Are Not Enough

I’m Suzanne Cannon, co-founder of VetBilling, and our story begins with one of the most painful moments of my life.

Years ago, my schnauzer got sick on a weekend, and the only option was the emergency clinic. My pet insurance was reimbursement-based, so I had to pay several thousand dollars upfront and wait. I was also going through a major life transition, and I was unexpectedly declined for financing.

Not because I was unable or unwilling to pay. Not because I was irresponsible. I was credit invisible, one of millions without enough credit history to be approved. I felt scared and powerless because I didn’t know how to help my dog.

The Gap Nothing Could Fill

That experience stayed with me because I knew I wasn’t alone. Pet insurance often can’t help at the point of care, third-party financing isn’t always available or enough, and informal in-house plans are hard for clinics to manage.

The Perspective That Shaped VetBilling

Before VetBilling, I spent years as a pastoral counselor and hospital chaplain, helping people navigate fear, grief, and conflict. That perspective shaped VetBilling. Cost-of-care conversations aren’t just financial transactions, they are moments of vulnerability for clients and moral stress for veterinary teams.

The System That Was Missing

VetBilling offers another path for clients and veterinary teams: a fully managed payment plan system that helps clients access needed care when full payment or third-party financing isn’t suitable, without leaving practices to carry the risk alone. For more than a decade, I’ve seen it work exceptionally well in veterinary medicine. Most practices just never had the right system. VetBilling is that system.

The FOundation

VetBilling is a practice-controlled veterinary payment plan system built exclusively for veterinary medicine. The practice sets its own approval criteria, controls its own payment terms, and maintains the full client relationship. VetBilling manages billing administration, automated payment processing, and repayment follow-up. The payment plan is the practice’s plan, not a third party’s loan. 93.8% of VetBilling payment plans are repaid in full. The system exists to help more pets get care, and to ease the moral distress veterinary teams carry when financial barriers stand in the way.

VetBilling’s success rate is high because it is a managed system. It replaces informal payment arrangements with structure, visibility, follow-up, and reporting. Practices that implement payment plans intentionally as access-to-care infrastructure, rather than as a last resort, achieve the best results. Care moves forward, and more revenue stays in the practice.

The Result

Why Offer Practice-Controlled Payment Plans in Your Practice

Reduced Economic Euthanasia

Economic euthanasia happens when treatment is medically possible, but financially out of reach. That is the moment every veterinary team dreads: the pet’s condition is treatable, the client wants to accept the recommended treatment, but the usual payment options fall short. The conversation shifts from the care the pet needs to what the client can afford, and everyone feels the path narrowing. VetBilling was built for that moment: to keep cost barriers from leading to heartbreak and a goodbye that comes too soon.

A Path Forward for Vet Care

A client in the exam room holds their sick 12-year-old cat, worried about what’s wrong. The veterinarian they trust explains the care the cat needs. Then comes the cost. Both sides feel the tension. The client wonders if the practice will work with them financially, or if they’ll have to make a decision they’re not ready to make. The veterinarian wonders if the clinic’s payment options will actually help. VetBilling brings the relief that changes moments like this, with payment plans clients can comfortably afford so care can proceed.

Less Financial Friction. More Trust.

Cost barriers create stress for everyone. Managed payment plans mean your team stops feeling stuck when other payment options don’t work. Clients feel empowered instead of helpless. Teams feel less moral distress. That strengthens trust in the care team, which is why VetBilling practices consistently report fewer negative reviews and accusations that they’re “all about the money.”

“We hear versions of this story all the time. One practice manager worried payment plans meant losing control and taking on too much financial risk. She moved forward anyway, and those fears didn’t come true. Years later, her clinic sends plans weekly because VetBilling is a regular part of the care conversation.”

About
VetBilling

VetBilling is a managed payment plan system built exclusively for veterinary practices. Your practice decides who qualifies and what terms make sense. VetBilling handles automated billing, payment monitoring, and problem resolution. 93.8% of VetBilling payment plans are repaid in full, according to a Frontiers in Veterinary Science study of 21,225 accounts across 397 clinics.

You offer payment plans through VetBilling by sending clients a secure enrollment link by text or email. The client completes their information, chooses from the repayment options your practice has approved, and submits the agreement electronically. The process takes just minutes. From there, VetBilling handles billing, payment processing, and follow-up. Your practice stays in control of when payment plans are offered and what terms are available, without using a third-party lender or requiring a credit check.

VetBilling replaces the inconsistency and administrative burden of DIY in-house plans with a structured, standardized process: clinic-approved guidelines, upfront deposit collection during enrollment (recommended but not required) customized agreements, automatic payment drafts, payment monitoring, problem resolution, and real-time reporting through your VetBilling dashboard. Instead of creating informal promissory notes or financial agreements on the fly, your practice can offer payment plans through a consistent system designed to keep plans organized, trackable, and easier to manage.

Technical setup is typically completed within one business day. Once your practice is set up in the VetBilling system, you can create payment plan contracts right away if you wish. We generally schedule complete onboarding and workflow training within the first week of signup.

For Pet Owners

Will a payment plan help my pet get the care they need?

That is exactly what it is designed to do. When a practice offers a VetBilling payment plan, you and your veterinarian can focus on what your pet needs instead of what you can pay all at once. You work out a plan directly with the practice, on terms you can manage, without a credit application. The care your pet needs does not have to wait.

VetBilling believes cost should never be a barrier to needed care. Many pet owners need a flexible, accessible alternative when third-party financing is not available, not enough, or not the right fit. A declined financing application does not mean a client is unwilling or unable to pay. VetBilling helps practices reduce cost barriers with a clear, manageable path forward, without a required credit check, without a third-party lender, and without risking the client relationship. The result is more care accepted, more revenue preserved, and fewer situations where care has to be discounted or clients have to be turned away.

VetBilling never leaves failed payments sitting on your team’s plate. We employ a strict payment recovery protocol so you’ll never chase payments. Your team is kept informed without being involved.

Yes. Many practices use VetBilling as their primary payment plan system and keep other financing options available. For example, when a client is approved for only part of the amount needed through a third-party financing option, the remaining balance can be set up on a VetBilling payment plan. VetBilling gives your practice more flexibility to help clients move forward without changing the financing options you already offer.
